TEAM MEMBERS

Hubert Salvail, Ph.D.
B.S., Université de Sherbrooke, QC, Canada
Ph.D, Université de Sherbrooke, QC, Canada
Postdoc, Yale University, CT
Assistant Professor
Hubert is originally from the French-speaking province of Québec in Canada where he received his undergraduate degree in Microbiology from the Université de Sherbrooke. He did his Ph.D. in the Department of Biochemistry at the Université de Sherbrooke in the lab of Eric Massé, elucidating the post-transcriptional regulation of iron homeostasis by the small regulatory RNA RyhB. As a postdoc at Yale University, he first worked in the lab of Eduardo Groisman where he investigated how signal transduction pathways regulating Salmonella virulence and stress response interact with each other and how their activity is modulated by small proteins, and then in the group of Ronald Breaker where he validated novel riboswitch classes. When not in the lab or in office, writing grants, he enjoys traveling, listening to new records, going to concerts, and discovering new restaurants and breweries.
Postdoctoral scholar
Runhua Han, Ph.D.
B.S., Central South University, China
Ph.D, Nankai University, China
Postdoc, University of Texas at Austin, TX and University of Winnipeg, MB, Canada
Run was born and raised in China, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering from Central South University and his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Nankai University, focusing on post-transcriptional regulation of microbial pathogenesis. He then moved to North America for postdoctoral training, first in Dr. Lydia Contreras’ lab at the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied RNA based gene regulation in extremophilic bacteria under oxidative stress, and later in Dr. Ute Kothe’s lab at the University of Manitoba, where he investigated RNA modifications and RNA-RNA interactions during ribosome biogenesis. Outside the lab, he enjoys hiking, traveling, cooking, exploring Florida, and learning new languages.

Payton Bowman, B.Sc.
Ph.D. student
B.S., University of Central Florida, FL
Payton was born in Oregon but raised in Apopka, Florida where her interest in research was sparked by her high school’s medical magnet. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Central Florida. She is continuing her higher education in their Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program where she now spends her time investigating RNA-based regulation of Salmonella stress response. When not in class or the lab, Payton enjoys crafting, playing board games with her friends and family, and trying new places around Orlando.

Alex Mabel, B.Sc.
Ph.D. student
B.S., University of Central Florida, FL
Alex is originally from Northern Illinois, where he received his Associate’s of Science degree from Rock Valley College and began his research journey and love for science. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, he moved to Orlando to pursue his Bachelor’s in Molecular Microbiology with a Spanish minor and certificate in Spanish Translation and Interpretation. After completing his Ph.D., Alex is open to wherever the world may take him, with interest in both academia and industry. When not in the lab, he enjoys spending his time with family, going to Disney, and learning new skills.

Mira Schmidt
Undergraduate researcher
Mira was born and mostly raised in Pittsburgh PA and moved to Jacksonville FL before high school where she graduated from Ponte Vedra High School’s Biotechnology and Medical Research Academy. She is now an undergraduate student studying Biotechnology with minors in Bioinformatics and Genomics and Spanish at the University of Central Florida. When not at the lab or going to class, Mira can be found at the gym, hanging out with friends and family, traveling to different places, and cooking.
